Why I Built an API Cost Meter

Then I added one more request: create a shader package for an imagined world created by Claude Code.

So the test had three useful parts:

  • A working browser preview
  • Multiple visual modes, including classic, ultra-realistic, and Claude dream mode

The build took about 23 minutes.

It used almost 100,000 tokens.

The estimated API cost was $13.65.

Honestly, I expected it to cost more. For a visual world foundation with shader modes, $13.65 felt surprisingly reasonable as a learning experiment.

That does not mean the full game would cost $13.65. It means the first foundation cost $13.65 in this specific test. That distinction matters.

What Claude Actually Built

The preview looked surprisingly close at first glance. Classic mode had the water, sky, sun, grass, and voxel-style environment you would expect from a Minecraft-style demo.

The shader modes were the most fun part. Ultra-realistic mode gave the world a different mood. Claude's dream mode felt stranger and more stylized.

But this was not full Minecraft.

It did not include mining. It did not include inventory. It did not include crafting. It did not include the full mechanics that make Minecraft feel like Minecraft.

So the honest takeaway is this: Claude Fable 5 built the world foundation, not the whole game.

The Real Lesson: Measure Before You Believe the Demo

AI coding demos are easy to overread. A great screenshot can make a project feel more finished than it really is.

That is why cost tracking helps. It turns a vague reaction into a practical question: what did this step cost, what did it produce, and what would the next step likely require?

If you are building with AI, this is the habit I recommend:

  • Track the cost of each experiment
  • Separate foundation work from finished product work
  • Be honest about what is missing
  • Use small tests before committing to bigger builds

I was pleasantly surprised by the result and the cost.
