I tested Fable 5 vs Opus 4.8 with the same practical AI coding prompt.

The goal was simple: build a three artifact startup from one prompt, with no revisions, and see which model gave me something I could actually use.

This was not a benchmark-style test. I wanted a builder test. The kind of test that tells you whether an AI coding model can create a working product flow, not just a pretty screenshot.

Speed Was Not the Deciding Factor

Both models were fast enough.

Fable took a little longer to complete, but not enough for that to matter. When you're already getting full working app attempts in minutes, a small speed difference is not the thing I care about most.

The better question is:

Which one gives me a better starting point?

For this test, that came down to design direction and product function.

Fable Made Stronger Design Choices

The first thing I noticed was Fable's visual direction.

It used a high contrast shadow effect that immediately felt more interesting. It had a stronger identity. It felt less like a generic AI-generated product.

Opus looked professional at first, but it fell into the familiar purple AI app style.

If you've vibe coded for a while, you know the look. Purple gradients, soft cards, clean enough to pass a quick glance, but not distinct enough to feel like a real brand.

To be fair, I did not give either model strict visual direction. I wanted to see what they would choose by default.

That made Fable's choice stand out more.

The Product Builder Is Where Opus Broke

The real test started when I tried to use the app.

On the Opus side, the builder was not functional. I could not add links. I could not click through the experience. The app looked like a product builder, but the core flow did not work.

That is a big deal.

A screenshot can make a broken app look finished. But once you start clicking, the truth shows up fast.

On the Fable side, I could add a Clearmud profile, add a website link, add a YouTube link, switch themes, preview the public page, and open the 3D room view.

Was the 3D room perfect? No.

I should have prompted that part with more detail if I wanted a more polished visual result.

But the key difference is that Fable's builder worked. That made it a better starting point.

The Founder Dashboard Made the Difference Clearer

The founder dashboard mattered because it tested whether the app felt like a business system.

Fable gave me a slick dashboard with analytics, demo fleet views, user registration, and even a churn risk section. It felt like the model understood the business loop.

Opus had a decent dashboard too, but because the product builder failed, the full flow could not really connect.

That is the lesson here.

When you're testing AI coding models, don't only ask if the output looks good. Ask whether the pieces work together.

Can you create data? Can you preview it? Can you export it? Can another part of the app use it? Can you keep building from there?

Those are the questions that matter for real AI app development.

My Takeaway From This AI Coding Test

For this one prompt AI coding test, Fable 5 beat Opus 4.8.

Not because Opus is bad. Not because this proves Fable wins every task. This was one practical use case with one prompt and no revisions.

But in that use case, Fable gave me stronger design choices and a working app flow. Opus gave me something that looked decent, but broke when I tried to use it.

That is why I keep saying this: judge AI builds by real product flow, not screenshots.

Click the buttons. Add the data. Test the empty states. Paste bad JSON. Preview the public page. Check whether the dashboard actually connects to the product.

The boring stuff tells you the truth.
